The first event to kick off for this year's Audi Fashion Festival is the Audi Star Creation Competition held on 13th May where 12 finalists selected from the inital 355 submissions from 16 countries battled it out for a handsome cash prize, the opportunity to showcase a Capsule Collection in Audi Star Creation next year and the attractive a year long internship with the prestigious leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin.
Each of the selected finalists showcased 5 pieces from their collection each with a theme or elements that inspired them.
Among the collections, the ones that piqued my interest were those by the 21-year-old Mongolian Batmunkh Uugantuya and the 24-year-old Ham Yu Lian from Korea.
Batmunkh's inspiration came from the harmonious formation of rocks from her native country Mongolia.
She had cleverly layered the different fabrics and various colours to create a creative ready to wear look. Subtle but definitely unique.
Ham Yu Lian's inspiration on the other hand came from a more oriental approach based on the concept of "The beautiful Connection of Asia".
The main element that is vital to her collection is the korean traditional ornamental knots, showcasing the flow of the different stages in the completion of the knots on the pieces.
The intricacy and delicate emphasis on the silhouette definitely captured my attention to the collection.
Even though the two designers whom I fancied did not make it to the selected 3 winning spots. I was glad that our Singapore representative 21-year-old Haziq Putra was one of the contenders and also the winner for the Audi Young Designer Award.
Haziq's inspiration for his menswear collection came from his trip to Kelantan on their culture for dyed batik and the "Wau Bulan" which is their signature Giant Kite.
He cleverly infuses the 2 concepts together giving the collection theme as "The Pursuit to Freedom", which depicts the freedom to fly and the from the flow of the dye in the batik.
Besides the fascinating fashion show, guests were pampered with decadent treats from the sponsors for Audi Fashion Festival.
